11/28/2007 4:44PM Randy Wolf, the owner of Lexus of Naperville and Toyota of Naperville, spoke eloquently and touchingly about his latest project, "Turning Point." Turning Point will be an all-inclusive community that will accommodate children and young adults with autism. Randy has been deeply involved with the Cure Autism Now program.

The Club met at the Naperville Millennium Carillon and ascended Moser Tower to take in the view, on the last day the Tower was open for the season.

10/24/2007 4:44PM Vicky Joseph, the founder of Families Helping Families, updated our Club on recent events and future plans for her group. Families Helping Families provides apartments and volunteer mentors to homeless families in DuPage County while they are working to reclaim their lives through education. It is a grass-roots organization started locally in 1994.

Our guest speaker was Conor Cunneen (Consultant, Author, Speaker, Humorist). (Shown below on the right.)

Conor gave an overview of the points made in his business book, "Why Hasn't Ireland Invaded America?" Club members listened as Conor presented three key business lessons in an engaging and entertaining manner. Lessons learned -- Have a clear and compelling vision for your business; Go to the source and learn; and, Create a brand experience.

10/10/2007 4:44PM Attorney Dick Bales, one of the world's experts on real estate title issues, gave a fascinating talk about the Great Chicago Fire that started on Oct. 8, 1871. Did Mrs. O'Leary's cow really start it? Dick Bales wrote a book in answer to that question. The process of writing the book was nearly as interesting as the Great Fire itself.

Sai Padma Murthy, an advocate for the disabled in rural India, visited the Club and discussed her activities helping the poor, disadvantaged, and otherwise challenged people in her home community in India.

She was presented by Dr. Prakash Tata, a member of the Rotary Club of Naperville (Noon), shown together here at the Oktoberfest tent.

Dr. Alan Leis, Superintendent of School District 203, presented options the District is considered for resolving space, obsolescence, and other problems faced by Naperville Central High School and several elementary and middle schools in the District. Dr. Leis and members of his staff are seeking community input regarding the facilities options. Known as Touch the Future, the initiative involves community meetings scheduled in all 21 schools and with community organizations.

 

9/19/2007 4:44PM The Naperville Police Department presented a program on Identity Theft. One important piece of advice is to not mail checks or important documents from your home mailbox. Take all important documents to the Post Office. The flag up on a mailbox sends a message to vandals. Also, remember to shred all financial information that is thrown away.

North Central College President Hal Wilde and Rick Spencer, vice president of institutional advancement, updated our club about the Concert Hall and Fine Arts Center as well as other NCC theater venues that are being built about a block from downtown. Going up at the corner of Chicago Avenue and Ellsworth, the 57,000 sq. ft. facility designed by the internationally acclaimed Chicago architectural firm of Loebl, Schlossman and Hackl, Inc., has been planned and sited to support the needs of both the College and the Naperville community. And more exciting theater space is planned throughout the campus.

FYI: President Wilde made history with our new Rotary Club as our first official guest speaker back on Feb. 22, 2006!

Jared Canfield, a Naperville home-schooled junior, presented his patriotic speech about the Constitution which advanced him to the final round of 70th Annual American Legion Oratorical Contest. Since December, Jared has been competing with high school students advance to state champion and a chance to be the recipient of an $18,000 college scholarship at the national event.  We heard his speech just before the final round with 49 other state champions in Indiana-Purdue University Conference Center in Indianapolis.

Ron Czalbowski, a new member of the Rotary Club of Naperville, presented "Safe Wheels of America."  The award-winning project which has received national acclaim was first organized ten years ago to promote school/business/community partnerships that will urge safe driving habits to students enrolled in drivers education classes.

KidsMatter Executive Director Idalynn Wenhold presented an overview of the group's Job Fair. KidsMatter is a local nonprofit organization that partners with youth, parents, businesses, social service agencies, youth serving organizations, schools and faith communities to support the development of caring, competent and responsible young people.

Rotary District 6450 Governor Sue Smallwood will present an overview of her experiences in Rotary to our provisional club on this special date during the holiday season. Since the 2006-07 Rotary year began in July, our district governor has been making the rounds to all the Rotary Clubs in the district. This meeting would be a good one to invite a guest who might want to know more about Rotary and how it all connects---and especially at this level of commitment. Bring your questions, too.

Preview of Hometown Holidays, the Electric Light "Friends of Little Friends" Parade, the Grand Illumination and Santa's Arrival in Downtown Naperville on Nov. 24.  Jack Ryan, Executive Director for Little Friends, also will be on hand to bring us up to date about the organization, the services it provides and how it benefits from Hometown Holidays.

Walter Johnson, Vice President of Resource Development at the Heritage YMCA will present updates to us about the Y, its upcoming Prayer Breakfast and the Strong Kids Campaign. He'll also talk about the impact of the Community Resource Center, an important initiative that provides a place for kids after school.

Immediately following Rotary on Nov. 15, we can had over to the Pre-Emption House at Naper Settlement for the 35-cent Club. Three of Naperville Heritage Society's past presidents Rotarian Tom Bursh, Peg Yonker, and Rotarian Pat Benton will be serving drinks and sharing stories as celebrity bartenders until 7 p.m.

Our program this week will feature a little history on two counts.  First up, Peg Yonker will give up a brief overview of her new book, Lone Feather and the Settlers, A History of Naperville, Illinois, finished just in time to wrap up Naperville's 175th anniversary year. The progressive narrative depicts three Naperville woman that Peg has chosen to portray in first-person interpretations she presents for the Naperville Heritage Society Speakers Bureau.
 
Then Art Muehlhausen will provide some history about Rotary to bring longtime and new members up to speed as we move forward with our charter. Rotary International has produced several enlightening videos and Art will select one for us.

Patti Powers and Pat Benton will share the podium this week as we get to know two first-time Rotarians.  Patti, the provisional club's sergeant-at-arms, is a travel agent who already has "made up" a missed meeting during an international trip to Croatia.
 
Pat, the provisional club treasurer, is a native Napervillian, who is bringing his banking insights to volunteer service. Pat recently accepted an award for his parents who were inducted into the Hall of Honor at Naper Settlement in recognition of his family's dedication to the Naperville Heritage Society. Here's hoping he'll share some fish stories about his favorite memories as we get to know him!

Since 1979, The Education Center of Developmental Resources has been among the nonprofit agencies in Naperville working to empower children who are dealing with a broad spectrum of problems. Ed Channell, President of the Rotary Club of Naperville, directed this program to us.

Our featured program this week will be getting to know Stephanie Penick.  Stephanie is the club's President-Elect.

Due to professional schedule conflict, architect Pete Crawford's presentation scheduled for this date is postponed.  As a past president in 2003-04 of the Rotary Club of Naperville, Pete has served as vice-president, president-elect on the Rotary Club Board of Directors, providing him with a wide range of leadership experience.  Pete also served as construction manager for the Riverwalk during its expansion from Washington St. to Hillside Road when the Rotary Plaza was designed and built adjacent the Washington Street Bridge.

This week, we'll get to know two of our members, Nancy Quigley and Gary Baumgartner.

First up, our featured program will be getting to know the owner of Quigley's Irish Pub. Nancy was co-chairman of the 2006 West Suburban Irish St. Patrick's Day Parade, to name one charitable cause. She's also an active volunteer with Naperville's emergency services. Nancy is a first-time Rotarian and our provisional club secretary.

Gary, a founding member of the Rotary Club of Naperville/Sunrise in 1991, will enlighten us about his Naperville heritage and passions for community service from the Jaycees to the YMCA to Rotary. No doubt we can count on a little financial advising information as well. A past-president of the Rotary/Sunrise, Gary is also the provisional club president.

Our featured program will be getting to know Erin Christianson, who is listed among the youngest members of the Rotary Club of Barrington as he awaits being a charter member of the Provisional/Rotary Club of Naperville/Downtown. An exciting moment for Erin last month was when his young cousin who takes photos of exotic cars and their owners appeared in June on the Jay Leno Show!

Please remember, we will be meeting at Bistrot Margot beginning June 21.  Our program will feature Sister Florence and Sister Beatrice who will update us on Rotary projects, including a water well for clean drinking water, in Upendo Village, Kenya, Africa. Upendo Village is a project designed to respond at the local level to the needs of women and their children living with HIV/AIDS.

Mary Ensor of Hesed House will give us an update and overview about the center for ministries in Aurora providing services to poor and homeless persons. We'll also learn how it links to Public Action to Deliver Shelter (PADS®), another agency equipped to assist homeless individuals and families with all aspects of their lives.

Rotarian Scott Przybyla, who is member of the "Rotary Club of Naperville New Member Committee," will give our provisional club an overview of the 12:15 club's new fundraiser, "Rotary Presents Connie Payton, Another Avenue of Service," slated for Aug. 22 at Pfeiffer Hall.  Scott will describe the process, how this idea has progressed, and provide information about sponsorships.

Rotarian Pat Merryweather, one of two International Service Directors for the Rotary Club of Naperville, will be our guest speaker. Pat's enlightening presentation will acquaint us with the grant process and how several successful projects were funded with the help of matching grants.  Partnering with the Rotary Club of Naperville and Rotary Sunrise on international initiatives and working in cooperation with District 6450 and Rotary International will help our provisional club make the biggest difference around the world. Currently, the local Rotary International Service Committees are looking to fund water projects, HIV/Aids screening and prevention, solar ovens, orphanages and more. Bring your questions!

Naperville native David Eigenberg, an actor who is performing this month on the Chicago stage and who is seen nightly as Steve in reruns in Sex in the City, will be our speaker.  David will provide some of the highlights of growing up in Naperville, the rewards of a good education and much more. He'll probably have a few choice anecdotes about growing up in a creative household with a loving mother who believes "childhood should be a journey...not a race."
