Meeting Schedule

The Rotary Club of Naperville/Downtown meets at Tessa's Restaurant, located at 16 W. Jefferson Ave., in downtown Naperville. (Click here for a map to Tessa's.)

Use the elevator at the rear of the restaurant or use the staircase at the front entrance of Tessa's.

The Club meets officially from 4:44 to 5:45 p.m. every Wednesday. Make-ups are $20. Light refreshments, libations and fellowship are served up from about 4:35 to 5 p.m., with club announcements, introductions, and a short program immediately following. All programs are scheduled for 20-30 minutes.

Steve Hyett's Naperville Vintage Postcard Review. Sunrise Rotarian Steve Odden will also introduce us to the Rotary Group Study Exchange (GSE) Team from Italy.

Neal Cerne will introduce DuPage County historian Rick Carney. Also, Sister Florence will be visiting from Upendo Village and will brief us about the happenings in Kenya.

Chuck Corrigan will introduce Bea Peterson from Feed My Starving Children, a hands-on organization that gives families a chance to pack nutritious meals made up of rice, soy, vitamins and dehydrated vegetables, partnering with relief organizations worldwide to distribute these meals to starving children.

Construction is now complete at Feed My Starving Children's Chicagoland site, located at 555 Exchange Court in Aurora, IL. Volunteers began packing food at the new site on Monday, April 14. Prior to the site opening, food packing took place at a temporary location in Naperville, IL.
A Grand Opening Event will take place on Sunday, May 18, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Aurora FMSC site (555 Exchange Court, Aurora, IL). This family-friendly event will consist of educational displays, activities, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2 p.m.

Celebrate Club President Stephanie Penick's Last Club Assembly! Approve Community Service Grant allocations.

Also, Ed Fey is our host for a program by Past District Governor Chris Reilly. Chris was very helpful to Gary Baumgartner when it was time to apply for our new Paul Harris Fellows. Chris has titled his program:
“Why Rotary and the Rotary Foundation need a Rotary Club of Naperville / Downtown.”

Edward A. Susmilch, Principal of Technology Center of DuPage, will be our featured speaker. TCD, located in Addison, offers Career Acceleration Programs available to high school juniors and seniors in the DuPage County area. Students receive practical, hands-on training in one of today's 20 fastest growing careers. Careers such as television production, graphic communications, electronics, automotive technology, and health care are among the offered course studies.

Dr. Joe Marek from the Midwest Heart Foundation presented a very informative program, "Sudden Cardiac Death in Young Adults / Why Does It Happen and What Can Be Done?"  For more info, visit www.midwestheart.com.

Dr. Joy Ross and talented singers from WVHS Warriors Reaching Out (Mosaic Choir Ensemble) performed for our group. Fantastic! Also, Liz Zienty and NCHS Interact students told us about their projects.

These two groups were the first that benefited from our RCN Downtown Matching Grants.

Roger Hopkins, President and CEO of Choose DuPage, (20-year member of the Rotary Club of Sycamore!) talked about the current state of economic development in DuPage County, and the plans of Choose DuPage to help improve conditions for development in the county.

Club Meeting:

Sunrise Rotarian Nicki Scott introduced Elke Kroeger-Radcliffe, who told us her story of creating the Tikondane project in Zambia, Africa. Since arriving in Katete, a small town in the Eastern Province of Zambia, over 13 years ago, Elke has provided a loving attitude and positive outlook to all she encounters.

Elke updated us with a presentation about the Rotary Sunrise Water and Education Project that includes the School Building Project in Tikondane. Our club has contributed to Sunrise's first matching RI grant.

Ron Nyberg introduced the owner of the DuPage Dragons, a member of the Central Illinois Collegiate League sanctioned by the NCAA and Major League Baseball. The collegiate baseball team finds its home at Benedictine University's 108-acre campus in Lisle to provide college students the opportunity to play amateur ball in the summer with wooden bats in a maximum 50-game schedule.

Kent Demuth, a member of the Rotary Club of Naperville, shared his experiences and insights as a volunteer in Bangladesh on behalf of Rotary International's Polio Plus initiative.

In December 2007, Kent traveled throughout the South Asian country with Rotarians and volunteers to help immunize children, part of RI's fight to eradicate polio that began in 1988.

Maxine Appenbrink, owner of Naperville's first full-sized field indoor sports complex, Players Indoor Sports Center, told us about her plans to open in late March.

Lynda Reilly of the RCN/Downtown Scholarship Committee introduced officials from two local junior colleges who helped us establish our RCN/Downtown Scholarship grant program.

Our guests were Stacy Rungaitis and Mike Trench from the College of DuPage as well as Katharine Richards and Becky Judd from Waubonsee Community College. They gave us wonderful feedback as to the positive impact that our scholarships will make.

Club Meeting:
Paul Harris Dinner

The Rotary Club of Naperville/Downtown celebrated       its 1st Anniversary! District Gov Art Davis presented fourteen new Paul Harris Fellowship Awards!

The featured speakers was Naperville Sunrise Rotarian Rick Quackenbush, who recounted his recent trip to Nigeria as part of Rotary's PolioPlus Immunization Day.

Also speaking were Pat Merryweather, Vice President of the Rotary Club of Naperville, who updated the club on the Upendo Village, Kenya, project, and Nicki Scott, Vice President of the Rotary Club of Naperville/Sunrise, who gave an overview of her club's educational project in Tikondane, Zambia.

Jim Boyajian led the club during our second Strategic Planning Meeting, reviewing our goals from last year, and measuring our performance against those goals. We also talked about plans for the coming year.

Lynda Reilly introduced Suzanne Garvin of The Dream Foundation, a group that grants final wishes to terminally ill adults. A very moving presentation.

Also, the Interact Club at Naperville Central High School visited to tell us about their club, and their fundraising effort of collecting old cell phones, inkjet print cartridges, DVD movies/portable players, digital/DVR cameras, video/MP3 players. If you have upgraded recently and still have any of these items, please let Liz Zienty know, and someone will pick them up from you.

Jack Shindler of North Central College spoke about NCC's annual International Festival slated for Feb. 10 in Merner Fieldhouse. Jack is a professor of English and the Director of International Programs at NCC.
